Today I’m sharing antique hen on nests for a Vintage Easter Joys blog hop! I’m joining 11 other bloggers and we are sharing vintage Easter in our homes! A big thank you to Amber at Follow the Yellow Brick Home for arranging this hop! If you are coming from Jann at Have a Daily Cup of Mrs. Olson, welcome!
Antique hen on nests began in the late 1700s and were made by Staffordshire and Dresden. The original form came from China but became popularized in Europe (like, everything, it seems!).
The Victorians were all about the animals so they were mass produced in pressed glass in the late 1800s to keep up with the demand! In the 20th century, many American companies, such as Westmoreland and Fenton started producing these and turned them into the beloved kitschy classic. They also come in version of milk glass, carnival glass, ironstone, and majolica.
This one below is antique Staffordshire. Notice the glazed paint. The antique glazed ones are generally Staffordshire. (Do you see the little chick under the wing? So cute!)
This one below is German. It is bisque. In general, the bisque ones are from Germany. This white one below is ironstone. It comes from Scotland – specifically from Jon Thomson and Sons in Glasgow, circa 1860-1880.
This lustrous black glazed hen on nest is called Jackfield Staffordshire. Jackfield was most popular in the 1750s but there was a revival in the late 1870s. This one is late 1800s. Jackfield has this dark black (lead!) glaze.
The one below is German – it is bisque. The one above and below I had a hard time getting pictures of because they roost (hehe!) high up on my kitchen over the range.Sometimes you can still find them with their inserts still in them. This one above still has its insert in it!
They were originally used to serve eggs or butter. This one is for eggs. Hen on nests may not be what you traditionally think of for Easter decor, but I thought… why aren’t they more popular for Easter? They were meant to hold your eggs!
Hope you enjoyed seeing how I feather my nest with antiques this Easter! If you missed it, I shared my Easter Bunny Table and French Farmhouse Easter tour. Also, on Friday please be sure to stop by and add your on Easter posts for the weekend link party!
Now hop on over to Linda’s Itsy Bits and Pieces to see her fabulous vintage Easter decor!

I made these mini Easter basket cakes and am so delighted with how they turned out – I just had to share them!
They are so cute and pretty easy to make – you just have to have the correct pan, that’s all!
I had received a little basket pan as a gift last year – these are supposed to be for strawberry shortcakes but I think they look pretty cute as Easter baskets!
I filled each little basket with some Robin’s eggs and a little Lindt chocolate.
I sprinkled them with a little powdered sugar so you can see the basket pattern better!
French Yogurt Lemon Cake (recipe adapted from NY times)
Ingredients
Directions
You can just make this in a loaf pan too instead of the basket pan. Bake instead for about 50 minutes.
Now it can be a little dry – I would actually recommend serving it with some fresh fruit. While the robins eggs are cute, I don’t think they will actually go well with the cake! It would also go well with some lemon curd! I love using the Lindt chocolates – see my Easter sweets bar here.
You can get the basket pan here or at Amazon!
I’m delighted to share my Easter Bunny Table with you all.
The Easter bunnies have hopped onto my table – and brought their veggies stolen from the garden with them! Affiliate links are used in the post.
A French linen runner sits below the bunnies.
Vintage French pink goblets go with the pastel colors of the china. The blue chargers were a find at Homegoods for an absolute deal!
The bunny plates, white plates and chargers are all Juliska.
I found these little napkins and thought they would go perfect with the table!
The bunnies pulling the egg carts are still a favorite of mine. I have had them for years. A new checkered egg sits in the cart.
We do have rabbits in our garden – jack rabbits, that is. They aren’t as cute as these rabbits here!
Little nests also sit in the center of the table.
I hope you enjoyed this Easter table!
If you missed it, my French Farmhouse Easter Tour is here – also with a Spring Blog Hop with 10 amazing bloggers sharing their homes! Last year I shared an Easter sweets bar idea here.

Welcome to my French Farmhouse Easter Tour!! If you are coming over from Decor to Adore, welcome! I know you were inspired by all of her beautiful Spring ideas!
Also a big thank you for Amber at Follow the Yellow Brick Home for organizing the tour!
Recently found this vintage pitcher at a flea market and fell in love with the blue. When I saw these ranunculus at the flower market I knew they would look fabulous here!
I have some vintage style paper mache Easter eggs surrounding the pitcher and vintage hankies below to catch drips!
Someday I hope to have my own farm fresh eggs in this egg tree! For now the colorful marble eggs will do!
A look across the main living room. The room is filled with the scent from the queen of flowers in Provence gardens, the rose geranium, with its citrus-scented leaf.
The Easter animals have marched their way onto the mantel.
An Easter garland with hidden Easter eggs hides behind the miniature Steiff animals.
Circling back to the entryway, these rabbits are here to greet you!
I got carried away with ranunculus – one of my top three favorite flowers. These ones match the carrots!
Ah, more ranunculus! These are getting ready to go into a vase. But they are so picture-perfect on the farmhouse sink I had to take a picture!
The flowers have jumped into the vase and met some bunnies who hopped onto the island! The little chicks are actually ornaments but they are so perfect for Easter I use them during this time of the year instead. Many cute Easter items can be found in the Christmas section – also great if you look at after-Christmas sales!
Easter eggs are now perched high up on the mantel hood.
I saw this cute little rabbit pulling the egg carriage this year and knew he’d have to come home with me. I adore the little egg carriage filled with candies!
Onto the baking side of the kitchen – of course Easter chocolates are over here. Some of the chocolates are real and some are faux – can you spot the difference?
Also, can you believe some of these pictures I shot with my new iPhone??
These bunnies are in the dining room. You can see my Easter Bunny Table here and an Easter dessert so stay tuned!

In this post: Easter Entertaining Ideas – a Sweets and Treats Bar.
Easter is just around the corner and I know that many of us enjoy Easter sweets and treats!
So I came up with this cute little Easter entertaining bar.
It is so easy for you to replicate at home.
All you need is some lemonade or drink of your choice, a variety of sweets and some Easter decorations!
I used a cake stand and a hat box to display some of my treats.
A chocolate bunny (although he is faux) sits at the top, but Lindt sheep and rabbits are dancing below him!
I made some raspberry and orange blossom macarons. Click for their respective recipes.
I set them on an Easter plate. An antique French plate serves as a dramatic back drop.
The glasses are on the table, but you can have some tasty pink citrus lemonade. Some vintage linens in Easter colors are here to catch your dribbles!
More Easter treats sprinkle the table…
I just love how cute Easter chocolate is! Every year I buy Lindt chocolate.
Here are a few of my favorite Easter candies (affiliate links used)

The bunnies hopped onto my dining table last week and now this week I’ve finished decorating the house for Easter!
Besides Christmas, Easter is my favorite holiday to decorate for. I think it’s because I’m a sucker for bunnies.
In fact, maybe I should rename my blog Maison du Lapin. HA! I’m giggling to myself because there are tons of jack rabbits all of the time in my yard too!
Every year I look forward to seeing my little mohair Steiff bunnies and sheep.
These are all still handmade today in Germany – I went to the Steiff Museum in Germany when I was there last year.
Some of them are redone vintage designs. Some are new designs. The one below is a vintage design that was remade.
I have little Easter vignettes around the house. Here is a vintage Easter egg holder with alabaster eggs and little vintage cards. The Staffordshire couple stays there year round.
I like this little Easter egg ornament tree. I just set it actually into a serving piece and it fit perfectly!
I think it would look cute in the center of your Easter buffet with snacks in the tray itself!
The swan vase holds flowers and is flanked by Easter baskets!
These ornaments are actually from Christmas but I keep them instead in my Easter box!
Over on the French buffet is my pair of white ceramic bunnies. I got the standing one last year – he’s so cute with his little basket that serves as a vase. Unfortunately it has sold out.
I got the matching salt and pepper shaker years ago but there is a similar one here, nearly a replica!
A last look at this bunny pair. One year they were the centerpiece for an Easter table.
In the corner is an Easter bar… ready for treats and drinks! Sharing this next week…
Last week I shared the Easter table!
My favorite part of the table are the little nests with Easter chocolates sitting on each place setting!
And last but not least, I have the most fragrant orchid in an ivy vase with a moss bunny perched in it. Isn’t it adorable?
That concludes this year’s home tour!

Easter is just around the corner and my bunnies have hopped on out of storage and into the house!
The bunny trio serves as the centerpiece for the Easter table this year.
I had to restrain myself and not buy more Easter plates and use the ones I have instead!
I used the same little nests I found at Roger’s Gardens some years ago but this year I stuffed little Lindt Easter chocolates into them!
Aren’t the little chocolates cute? Each of your guests gets a little treat when they sit down!
The carrot and vegetable garland are new this year and match the other carrots I already have!
I had to try not to buy any new Easter plates this year!
These ones are from Pottery Barn several years ago and sold out quickly. The bottom plate is Juliska.
The little bunny carts pulling Easter eggs were a Pottery Barn find as well – they are filled with marble eggs.
Vintage French goblets add a nice pop of pink.
I could not stop taking pictures!
Are you decorating for Easter already?
