I have recently been thinking about hat box bags – you know, the ones that look like hatboxes.  For the younger generation – they are the round bags.

Let’s take a look – I’ll let the purses do the talking!

Antique and Vintage Elephant Garden Stools – Friday Favorites

Today I’m loving elephant garden stools.  When I started the Google search for “Elephant Stool” I was a little worried about what type of pictures I was going to see… luckily they all were of the porcelain and ceramic variety!

The barrel shaped garden stool is all over the decor world, but I confess I like the less common elephant shaped stools better.

From Bailey McCarthy  Curtains in a GP & J Baker fabric, a custom sofa in a Scalamandré stripe, 1950s Italian glass lamps from Jan Showers and vintage elephant garden stools turned accent tables. (this post contains affiliate links)

Dallas home of Marsina Stubbs featured in PaperCity Magazine.

It was actually kind of hard to find nice pictures of rooms with elephant garden stools!  The stools are very versatile and can be used many different places.

I am keeping my eyes out of the perfect garden stool… to be used in my shower as a little shaving seat!  I haven’t found it just yet.

At the house of Carlos Souza, in Architectural Digest.

The garden stools have been used in China for at least 1000 years.  The antique stools that are still around today are from the early 17th century (the late Ming Dynasty) – but those ones will come at quite a price.  They did not become popular in the USA until the mid 1900s.

I’ve rounded up a few I’ve found on the net. I am trying to only include vintage and antique seats. Why buy new when you can have antique??

I have noticed that recently the it-girls are wearing cashmere sweaters that are looser fitting! Great, perfect to hide the holiday weight gain! It seems turtlenecks are the style of choice.

Best Scented Christmas Candles for this Holiday Season

I love burning scented candles year round, but I especially love burning them during the holidays.  This list of Christmas candles are the candles you are really wanting to buy for yourself, but are also hoping someone may buy for you! They make great gifts and especially hostess gifts!

Since I burn a candle nearly nightly, I burn through a lot of candles.

Christmas Candles You Need NOW for your Holiday Home!

How many times have you opened a Christmas candle only to quickly recover it with the lid while making a face?

Well, with these Christmas candles that I am sharing with you, I promise you that you should not be making a Mr. Yuck face!

Let’s just start it out with my favorite Christmas candle-

The Best Scented Christmas Candles You Need Now!

Thymes Frasier Fir The scent of Siberian Fir needles with cedar wood and sandalwood create a just-cut forest fragrance that evokes warmth and comfort.  If you love pine-scented candles, this is by far the absolute best one out there today that smells just like freshly cut tree! Here is theUnder $20 candle if you want to try it! I also have the reed diffuser which I bought several seasons ago.  I use the Frasier Fir Reed Diffuser Oil Refill to refill it for a fraction of the cost of the diffusers themselves. I like to place them throughout the house so it smells like Christmas, such as in the guest powder room and the living room!

The Best Scented Christmas Candles You Need Now!

Holiday by NEST, with notes of pomegranate, mandarin orange, pine, cloves and cinnamon with a hint of vanilla and amber! If you are not into pine scents, this is my favorite non-pine-scent Christmas candle!

The Best Scented Christmas Candles You Need Now!

Illume Balsam and Cedar. Another great pine scented candle. Balsam and oak moss with notes of cedar wood, cinnamon and eucalyptus create a festive atmosphere. I have never burned it because everytime I have tried to buy it it has been sold out in the bigger size!

The Best Scented Christmas Candles You Need Now!

Winter Frost.  It smells of white birch, evergreen needles, sage, clementine, green moss, and clear amber.

The Best Scented Christmas Candles You Need Now!

Joy of the Season. It smells of apple, clementine, orange zest, pinot noir, grape, clove, cinnamon, tea leaves, vanilla bean, white musk. Another great non-pine scent for the holidays.

The Best Scented Christmas Candles to Make Your Holiday Home Smell Wonderful!

Feu de Bois by Diptyque  It smells just like a wood-burning fire.  I had it on my Fall candle list too, but I use it through the Winter as well!

Diptyque Holiday 2019 – This set of 3 has the limited edition holiday scents: Ambre Félicité’ is warm and floral, ‘Flora Fortuna’ has a spicy bouquet, while ‘Pin Protecteur’ conjures the fresh air of pine forests.

Branche Vermeil by Voluspa: Notes of Silver Cypress, Cedar, Pine Needles. How cute is the candle jar?

Voluspa – Crushed candy cane. Smells just like peppermint! The jar is adorable! They also have a small stocking stuffer version!

Elegant Halloween Decorating Ideas – Friday Favorites

I’ve been thinking about Halloween decor since it is October already (where did the time go??)…

…and I’ve been thinking about how to decorate your Halloween house in an elegant way.

So I started searching for inspiration.

You see, I am not so much into the creepy skeleton/zombies/bloody/insects.

There are other ways to decorate for Halloween other than, well IMO, the gross things that give me the creepy crawlies.

Let’s start with below, see, elegant candles, dark moody lighting, interesting florals…  You’ll notice a lot of the different pictures have similar themes.

Unless, of course, that’s your thing.  But it’s not my thing.  These decorating ideas could also work for younger children since they are not quite so scary (although stay around them if you light candles!)

In this post- Decorating with Velvet Pumpkins

I love velvet pumpkins, don’t you?

I first discovered velvet pumpkins almost 10 years ago.  We were living in Portland at the time.  Hot Skwash pumpkins are made locally in West Linn- and the only place I had ever seen them many years ago.

I remember walking into the little boutique and knowing that they were something special!

So I bought one, then two, then… well, now I have a collection!

I noticed them in Neiman Marcus a few years later. The first time I felt like I was in front of a trend!

It is no wonder the buyers for Neiman Marcus found them – they are gorgeous and quality made!

I love the look of velvet pumpkins.  I tried to create my own – and, well, they did not turn out as nearly as nice as they did in my head.

So I bought a few more.  Like this big one, below, is new to me this Fall.

Hot Skwash velvet pumpkins are made from real pumpkin stems with silk velvet and filled with crushed hazelnut shells – such an Oregon thing!

via Hot Skwash

Now I see them all over blog land and I am so happy! I love them and don’t tire of looking at them!

Let’s look at how others styled their beautiful pumpkins…

I have a crush…

on Alice’s country estate.

Not Alice from Alice in Wonderland, but looking at this pictures it does seem like a wonderland!

Alice lives in this fabulous house, Nantclwyd Hall, from the 17th century with a facade from the 1810s This is house came from her husband’s (Tom) side. It was decorated in the 1950s by John Fowler for his Tom’s parents.

Love the tapestries and chandelier.

I see this fancy palm tree and think, my cat would love that.

Rose fabric above and below is from Colefax and Fowler in Jubilee Rose. Below is her dressing room full of designer clothes!

Below, her dressing table.

 Bennison chairs and taxidermy.

Alice and her friend dressed up to go on a proper English ride (or hunt?)

Beautiful gardens, love the bird topiaries!  Nothing quite like an English garden!

The walls are painted in Edward Bulmer’s Cuisse de Nymphe Emue

I must say, the only thing I don’t care for is all of the taxidermy, such as this unicorn below.

Antique Persian rug.
Bennison curtains with Colefax and Fowler wallpaper.

And here is the it-girl, Mrs. Alice.

You can follow Alice’s Instagram here.

In this post – my favorite perfumes

This post contains affiliate links.

Let’s talk about perfumes… and my love for them!

I LOVE perfume.  It seems I have received one new scent every Christmas and I LOVE them all!

People will ask me… what’s your favorite perfume?

The answer…. well, it depends.

Depends on what, they say? I say, the seasons, my mood, where am I going…
Can you relate?

I also love wearing perfume but working at a hospital means perfume is forbidden! The horror!
So I have to make up for it all of the days I am not working!

Let’s dive into my fragrance collection!
All of the tidbits about the perfume are from Fragrantica. Also, don’t know the difference between cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum? Here’s an explanation.

My Fragrance Collection

Diptyque Women’s Do Son

Top notes are african orange flower, rose and iris; middle notes are tuberose and pink pepper; base notes are benzoin and musk.

Spring/Summer wear during the day.

Jo Malone London Nectarine Blossom & Honey Cologne

Top notes are green notes, black currant and petitgrain; middle notes are nectarine and black locust; base notes are vetiver, peach and plum.

I like wearing this in the late Winter, Spring and early Summer. One note about Jo Malone Colognes – they do NOT last as long as eau de parfums and given how much they cost I have to say I am disappointed in the longevity of the product. That being said, I still love them but it led me to my love of Diptyque!

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Eau De Parfum
A heart is floral and opulent with intensive, sweet and pure Sambac jasmine, seductive Centifolia rose, freesia and Cattleya orchid. Musk and patchouli in a base wrap us with an oriental scent, while its milky and powdery notes gently fondle our skin.
I love wearing this one in the evening during Fall and Winter.

Jo Malone London Orange Blossom Cologne

The scent of dewy leaves of clementine stretches over the delicate floral heart, composed of orange blossom, and water lily. The top notes are cedrat, green notes and clementine leaf. The heart is composed of orange blossom and water lily, while the base of orange blossom and lilac.

One of my absolute favorites and the one I wore on my wedding day!

Diptyque Women’s Eau Des Sens

Top notes are orange blossom and bitter orange; middle note is juniper berries; base notes are patchouli and angelica.
Love wearing this perfume in the Spring, Summer and Fall! I think the is my Summer favorite. Even though it is an eau de toilette, it lasts quite long!

Tory Burch Eau De Parfum

Tory Burch opens with notes of grapefruit, pink pepper, currant buds and leaves, mandarin and neroli. The heart blooms with peony, tuberose, mimosa, jasmine, carrot seed and sweet alyssum, on a base composed of vetiver, cedar, sandalwood and white musk.

My travel perfume. I actually have the Rollerball

Marc Jacobs Marc Jacobs Eau de Parfum
Top notes are gardenia and bergamot; middle notes are tuberose, jasmine, white pepper and honeysuckle; base notes are ginger, cedar and musk.
This is a Spring time perfume perfect for daywear.

Aerin Beauty – Mediterranean Honeysuckle Eau De Parfum

Their composition is based on a blend of luminous and sunny citruses blended with an intoxicating and sweet floral bouquet. Sweet honeysuckle and luminous grapefruit will take us to the Mediterranean beaches. The composition is accompanied with Italian bergamot warmed with sun and mandarin oil, making floral notes juicier. The floral bouquet, besides honeysuckle, allures us with lily of the valley, gardenia and sambac jasmine absolute.

My newest perfume in my collection. Love this for Summer days.

Diptyque Essences Insensees Rose De Mai Fragrance

Delicate, vivid, and fragile, this luscious scent is made with the centifolia rose, which has become an elusive rarity on the French Riviera. The fragrance features rose de mai, red berries and honey.

Love wearing this perfume in the evening year round. It is a limited edition so I try to wear it on special occasions only!

Dior J’Adore Eau de Parfum

J’adore presents a new conception of Dior feminity, a scent so new and so in line with Dior style at the same time – sweet but balmy, slightly sharp floral with fresh mandarin in the top; jasmine, plum, orchid and rose in the heart; and amaranth, musk and blackberry in the trail.
This was my first perfume! I have since run out of it, but still remember its scent!

Jo Malone London Blackberry & Bay Cologne

The fragrance features grapefruit, floral notes, vetiver, cedar, blackberry and bay leaf.

I like to layer this one with my other two Jo Malone colognes.  I sometimes wear it by itself but I usually layer it.

Burberry Brit by Burberry Eau de Parfum

It opens with fresh notes of green lemon, frosted pear and white almond. The heart blooms with white peony. The drydown is very gourmand with vanilla, amber, mahogany and balsamic Tonka bean accords.

Love this perfume, I usually wear it in the Fall and Winter and goes for Night and Day! This is my favorite Fall/Winter Perfume.

On the Wish List

I have been wearing samples of the following…

Louis Vuitton Apogee

Apogee, a delicate floral fragrance, features Grasse jasmine as the main ingredient with lily of the valley, rose, magnolia, guaiac wood and sandalwood.

Dans le Peau by Louis Vuitton

Dans la Peau is made of leather, musk and floral notes such as , jasmine, daffodil and magnolia.

Diptyque Women’s Eau Moheli
The fragrance features floral notes, ylang-ylang, patchouli, pink pepper, ginger, vetiver, benzoin and incense.
I wore this one when I was in Hawaii.  It felt very tropical.

Diptyque Women’s L’Eau de Tarocco
The fragrance features musk, Virginia cedar, saffron, ginger, cinnamon, incense, grapefruit, orange and tincture of rose.
Also love this one too!

Valentino Valentina Pink Eau de Parfum
Valentina Pink is a cheerful and energetic scent that opens with fruity accords of strawberries and blackberry musk. The heart is dominated by rose—there are May rose, Centifolia rose, rose buds and peony. The base is composed of cashmere, amber and pralines.
I received a little sample of this in the mail, you know, the one where it is sprayed on some paper and you get a little bit to rub on your arm… It smelled good.  I need to get a sample of it!

I also need to go explore some Chanel and Guerlain fragrances as well… maybe next time I am at the mall!

My mom told me I get my love of perfume from my German grandmother… she *loved* perfume and would spray so much on the scent would linger in the room hours of after she left.

I love to wear these fragrances because it makes me feel pretty and sophisticated, I feel like I’m channeling my inner European, and I think of my Oma when I spray perfume on.

What is your favorite perfume? Leave a comment!

In this post – German goat carts, also known as German potato wagons or farm carts.

source

This past weekend I went to the Portland Antique Expo Show and found an antique goat cart!

I was so excited to find one – and at a pretty good price!

I have been wanting a wagon for my porch for a while as I had visions of filling it with pumpkins like below…

Then I thought, oh! I could fill it with presents too… turns out someone else had the same idea!

Filling it full of plants also seems to be a popular option.

source

In my internet research, it seems that these types of goat carts originated from Germany around the 1900s.

They were used by the goats to haul things – goats are much cheaper to keep than horses!

Here I found a vintage postcard of the kids dressed in traditional wear hauling a goat farm cart of flowers.

Also found some vintage photographs of kids being hauled by their goats! These type of goat carts are different than the farm carts, but I had to include them because they made me smile!

The Amish are making repro goat carts, like below.

It seems some of them came with baskets too.

I am so excited to fill mine and use it in my decor!  Of course I’ll have to share with you all!

In this post – Cartier Bracelets

Let’s take a look at some pretty jewelry… the bracelets from Cartier.

FYI I am not paid to write this post (haha I wish!!) I just like them!

Now, I am not much of a jewelry person. What I mean by that is… I don’t have a ton of fancy jewelry. Like just my ring.

I don’t even have pierced ears (who’s a wimp about the needle? this person.)

So I was daydreaming about gorgeous bracelets that I’ll never own.

That’s okay. We can all daydream. Isn’t that the point of this blog?

Check out this bracelet!

Oh la la! a diamond cuff!

For every day jewelry, this seems like a nice piece!

But I like the cat ones!

The amulette de Cartier collection is a newer one with tons of colors.

The Love bracelet is iconic. You have to use a screwdriver to take it on and off.

I do like the Juste Un Clou collection too.

Someone wearing the love and juste un clou bracelets.

This art nouveau bangle is so fun!

Ah! More cats!

I like this one that looks like a rope tie!

Time for some showstoppers!

Well wasn’t that fun?

Which one is YOUR favorite? I think my answer is YES. I would take any of them!
