I was excited to be able to decorate this mantel for the first time for Halloween! This is what I’m calling my elegant Halloween mantel.

The bust usually sits on the mantel but I put a mask on him for this holiday.

I bought these courtly check “beware” pumpkins last year and love them on this mantel.

The ravens evoke memories of the horror movie, the Birds.

Of course the black cats are out too for this Halloween.

It seems though for Halloween decor I much prefer the decorations at night, even though they don’t photograph as well.

See my Halloween Mudroom this year too! It’s theme is “The Witch is Home!”

Halloween Decor

As you can see I don’t have a lot of Halloween decor.  It is mainly Fall decor with a few Halloween touches. I have owned the Jack O Lantern vase for a decade.

Halloween Decorating Ideas

I shopped my closet for the remaining Halloween items. These suede boots with pearl heels seemed like something a chic witch would wear!  The witch hat I owned from previous costumes.

Halloween Decor with a Witches Hat

A wand sits next to this spooky bag with a tiger’s head.

Witch Halloween Decor with Wand

The witch had just gone shopping for a new wand at Ollivander’s Wand Shop.  I had saved the bag from our trip to Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  I save tons of shopping bags and this is why – I reuse them for various things!
Witch Halloween Decor

My husband was outside when I was putting this photoshoot together – he looked inside for a second and saw me wandering around the house with my witch hat. He had a puzzled look on his face. I just continued on pretending like everything was normal in this haunted house!

Halloween Decorating Ideas

Your Halloween decor doesn’t have to be expensive or specifically themed.  You can take your Fall decor and throw in a few Halloween touches – instant Halloween! It doesn’t have to be “classic” Halloween with skeletons and bats… just some black lace and witch hat or a masquerade mask will do too!

I was thinking about my theme for my Halloween table this year and I was thinking… Haunted mansion initially.

Note: I have updated this post from earlier this month because I am participating in a fun Halloween Blog Hop put together by Amber at Follow the Yellow Brick Home!
If you are joining me after touring Belle Bleu Interiors, welcome!

Be sure to check out the rest of the Hauntingly Beautiful Homes too, scroll down to the end of the post to see the other fabulous bloggers sharing their Halloween homes too!

But then on vacation, I had listened to the Phantom of the Opera on the airplane and had been humming the tunes for the past few days…

Elegant French gothic Halloween table decor inspired by the Phantom of the Opera

Then I thought, oh! I have my theme!

French gothic Halloween table decor inspired by the Phantom of the Opera

Inspired from the phantom’s lair full of candelabras, as seen below from the movie.

I used these antique French altar candelabras as my base.

Red roses are the other main theme – the phantom gave Christine red roses.

I used an antique lace tablecloth on hand.

Dried roses rest on each plate.

Crows and pumpkins add the extra Halloween touch.

A look at this table during the daytime, although I had much more fun shooting at night!

Antique Meissen plates add a little extra color to the table and go with the flowers.

Elegant Halloween table decor

Everything on this table I already had on hand – except the fresh flowers, pumpkins (from our garden), and the Crows which I got here.

Just decorate for halloween with things you already have – and then sprinkle a few little Halloween touches here and there, such as: crows, witches’ hat or broom, potion bottles, skull, insects, pumpkins… you get the idea!

The red Celosia cristata remind me of the gyri of brains. The red roses and purple carnations add to the Halloween flair.

Spooky Ghost Hot Chocolate – Halloween Drink Ideas

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

Happy Ghoul-a-ween!

These ghosts are haunting my hot chocolate mugs and they can easily haunt yours too!

Last year I shared this recipe at Katherine’s Corner as a guest post, but I thought many of you may have missed it so I decided to repost it here.

Ghost Hot Chocolate - Halloween Drink Party Ideas

Get the printable recipe here

Ingredients

4 large egg whites

1/2 tsp cream of tartar

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

candy eyes

Supplies

Electric Mixer

Piping Bag and Piping Tip (I used Ateco tip #806)

Silpat or parchment paper

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 200F.  Line a baking sheet with Silpat or parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl preferably with an electric mixer, beat the egg whites, cream of tartar and vanilla on medium speed just until frothy.
  3. Next, gradually add your sugar while the mixer is mixing, little bits at a time until the sugar is all gone.  Now increase the mixer speed to medium-high.  Beat the mixture until stiff peaks form.  This takes around ~6-8 minutes.
  4. Now, fill your piping bag with a spoon.  Next, pipe swirls of meringue onto your baking sheet. To pipe, just place your tip perpendicular to the baking sheet and gently squeeze, lifting the bag up slowly to create layers.  Then at the end, do a little swirl to give the ghost a cone top! Next, add two candy eyes to each ghost. There is no “perfect” ghost, they are supposed to be spooky and uneven!
  5. Ghost Hot Chocolate - Halloween Drink Party Ideas

Ghost Hot Chocolate - Halloween Drink Party Ideas

  6. Bake in the oven for about 1 hour or until the meringues and dry and feel hard to the touch.  Turn off the oven and allow to continue to dry in the oven.  Once cool, you may enjoy!
  7. Fill your mug with hot chocolate and simply place on top!

The ghosts will keep at room temperature for up to 3 days!  Perfect to make ahead of time!

I confess, I had them up as decor way longer than 3 days.  I did not eat them, but I had tucked them into my Halloween village and used them as decorations.  I would not advise eating them if you keep them out that long, but they do make cute decorations if you have extra!

I had so much fun with these, maybe I’ll make some more again this year…

Cute and Not-So-Scary Halloween House Tour

We use affiliate links in our posts and our site. This means if you make a purchase using these links, we may earn a small commission. You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise! Our full disclosure is available under About.

In this post- Cute Halloween Decor Ideas that are not-so-scary or creepy!

This post may contain affiliate links

Halloween decor does not have to give you the creeps!  You can have cute Halloween decor too!

This year I’ve created a Halloween tree.

Now, if you know me, you know that I *love* Christmas and I *love* Christmas trees so any excuse to put up a tree is a perfect excuse for me!

I found this tinsel tree in the Christmas decor section and knew I would take it home with me and put it up promptly!

The Steiff Halloween scared black cats are the ornaments in the tree. As well as a few other creepy items – some potion book ornaments found for a bargain at Tuesday Morning as well a sa pumpkin gourd from a local Fall festival.

A raven also perched itself into the tree.  The ribbon is Mackenzie Child’s courtly check ribbon I’ve had for years.

A vintage clapsaddle candy box sits at the bottom as well as my Hedwig the Owl (from Harry Potter, if you are a fan!)

The Halloweentown village sits in the center of the island.  There is a haunted barn, mansion, carriage house and train.

It is particularly fun at night – the lights flash and make eerie sounds.  The sounds can be turned on and off.

A look at my elegantly haunted table… inspired by the phantom of the opera!

I wrote a whole post about this table earlier this week – check it out here.

Mr. Swan is joining the masquerade party held at the opera!

He is carrying dead roses this time.

Potion bottles add an extra Halloween flair.

My little phantom of the opera nutcracker is haunting the party as well on the left.

The Halloween mantle is extra spooky with the black and white courtly check!

I am not generally into new figurines, preferring antique ones instead, but I do like these little Halloween characters from Lori Mitchell.

The little girl witch riding her broomstick is new this year!

The center pumpkins say BEWARE!  I love their miniature size.

A last look at this year’s Halloween house tour!

I’ve been thinking about Halloween decor since it is October already (where did the time go??)…

…and I’ve been thinking about how to decorate your Halloween house in an elegant way.

So I started searching for inspiration.

You see, I am not so much into the creepy skeleton/zombies/bloody/insects.

There are other ways to decorate for Halloween other than, well IMO, the gross things that give me the creepy crawlies.

Let’s start with below, see, elegant candles, dark moody lighting, interesting florals…  You’ll notice a lot of the different pictures have similar themes.

An easy project, glue some black lace to simple glass votives.

This staircase below – elegant, but creepy but then kind of cute at the same time.  You don’t have to use the creepy noise-making zombies/ghosts/witches sold at the store to have a house decorated for Halloween.

Unless, of course, that’s your thing.  But it’s not my thing.  These decorating ideas could also work for younger children since they are not quite so scary (although stay around them if you light candles!)

How to Create a French Country Vignette for the Holidays in 5 minutes!

So today I thought I would share a few simple ways to create a French country vignette for the holidays… and it should only take you a few minutes!

This post may contain affiliate links. See my disclosure policy.

How to Create a French Country Vignette for the Holidays in 5 minutes! It works for Fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day...

Start with a French Floral Centerpiece as a “base”

My focal point is this pretty bouquet of roses and seeded eucalyptus in a French pitcher.  Flanked on the sides to balance the scene are some antique French candelabras.  If you have a French teapot, vase, pitcher, etc just fill it with flowers and voila! Instant centerpiece!

French Country style frequently has flowers and floral motifs so a bouquet of fresh flowers is perfect!  Mix old things and new things. The pitcher here is new while the candelabras and French buffet are antique.

Now that you have your “base centerpiece” as above, here is how you can change it for the holidays.

Fall

Add some white little pumpkins. That’s it! Done!  Your Fall decor does not have to be over-the-top. Just a few pumpkins here and there is enough.  These ones actually came from our garden. They are the only pumpkins that grew this year!

I told you it was easy and fast.  It still looks French Country, doesn’t it? This works for Fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving.  You don’t have to choose pink flowers, I just happen to love pink.

Christmas

For Christmas, I simply went outside and cut a few small sprigs from our redwood trees.  I then tucked in a few little ornaments into the sprigs to make it a little more elegant.

If you have any evergreens in your yard (or nearby), just clip a few little sprigs and you are pretty much done with this vignette!  This took me approximately 5 minutes, walking to and from the tree included!
(And, ironically, these pink ornaments just happened to be at the very top of the very first ornament box I opened! ha, what luck! Because that could have turned into an hour adventure!)

Creating a French country vignette for the holidays is really quite easy.  You can copy the look with a white pitcher and fufu candlesticks too!  I think the key here to the French country holiday look is using natural elements.

Pretend you are walking out of your Maison de Maître into your garden to pick your flowers, pumpkins, and pine tree sprigs… you know, your French country style also needs to have the right attitude!

Valentine’s Day

You can carry this into Valentine’s Day too.  I have these cute little French boxes that I set next to them… let’s pretend they are full of chocolates from my valentine! Also a little velvet bejeweled strawberry adds to the scene.

Overall, these different holiday vignettes were actually very cheap to create!  Most of the items came from the garden, and I could have simply picked some roses from my garden too but my pink ones aren’t blooming right now.  I owned all of the items already, so just go rummage through your closets (or “shop your house”) and create a little vignette!
