A Positano Inspired Table Setting – Dining Room Decor

It seems this Summer everyone is in vacationing in Positano. I came up with this little table setting to transport me there — minus the crowds and saving a few dollars.

I used my oil table cloth from Williams Sonoma from last year. I paired it with faux lemon trees and a majolica centerpiece. The lemon blossom napkin rings are new, from the “Positano Collection” at Pottery barn but have sold out. I also used my new tumblers from Juliska – they are melamine and are kid and outdoor friendly! I love them!

A closer look at my little napkin rings! To give the entire “Positano” feeling, I recommend burning a citron candle as well.

While Spring is my favorite season because all many flowers are blooming, I do love dahlia season in Summer!

I especially love these pom-pom type dahlias. The flower feels so funny when it’s held in your hand! Bringing them into the house and setting them down in the mudroom for a quick photo on the phone….

Then put them in this pretty vase by Astier de Villate and set them back in the mudroom. We got this new coat rack that I love. It looks faux bois but it is actually from a tree. I like it juxtaposed next to the ornate antique barometer.

This Summer I’ve enjoyed decorating with roses from my garden. For me, seasonal decor often involves just harvesting whatever is growing outside and bringing it inside! At this time of year, our roses are blooming.

Here I picked some Eden roses and placed them in a ginger jar. The rose candle that’s burning next to it is one of my favorites! It smells like you’ve stepped into a rose garden!!

They have actually been blooming since May. Here in California, they will actually bloom all the way through November.

My ginger jar is by Juliska which is discontinued.

Pool Time Essentials!

Here in California it has been heating up and we have already been able to enjoy our pool! Sharing a few of my FAVORITE pool essentials. Since it is MAY 1 already (where’d the time go??) AND shipping taking a little longer, if you see something, by the time you order it, it will be JUNE and ready for pool-party time!!

First off, these pool noodles are literally THE BEST. The closest that come to them are from Costco, which do sell out quickly at Costco so check there too.

Next, we just got this pool lounge floating chair this year and I immediately ordered a second one knowing my husband and I would constantly fight to sit in the chair! It is so comfy – it is basically a giant chair full of bean bag material that floats. You can also use it outside of the pool too.

Also we loved this float too – I spent all Summer on it last year.

I also got this pineapple float this year because I couldn’t resist how cute it looked! I can’t review it yet since I haven’t used it. If you like the pineapple float look but not Frontgate’s price, here is a cheaper pineapple float that is also very cute!

My other favorite pool chair lounger is this one, available on Amazon. It has a drink holder!

This floating 4 in 1 Hammock has over 4000 5-star reviews on Amazon – I personally haven’t tried it but am tempted to order it.

I also love these donut floating drink holders I used all Summer last year!!

They also have an assortment of floating drink holders! How fun is that?!

My FAVORITE pool side hat for sun protection is under $20 and folds up – I bring it when I travel to the beach too! It comes in an array of colors.

of course, a patio umbrella is a must too! This one is a great price from amazon, I would get the navy and white.

I also love the scalloped umbrella!

Ok maybe not an “essential” but we have some pineapple cups similar to these and we LOVE using them at the pool – makes it feel like vacation!

Transitioning from Summer to Fall Decor

The period from late Summer to early Fall is always a struggle for decorating with me. Today I’m sharing how I’m transitioning my decor and I’m joining many other fabulous bloggers in a Summer to Fall decor Blog hop!! If you’re coming from First Day of Home, welcome!

One of the easiest places for me to transition the seasons is in the kitchen.

Sunflowers are a really easy way to transition from late Summer to Fall. Just put a few here, a few there, and voila! You’re done.

I usually display this gardener nutcracker in August/September. He sits elsewhere in the house during the rest of the year but becomes front and center at this time of year.

As we enter later in September, I will add pumpkins.

A majority of the house is like this… nothing seasonal. Just decorated with antiques and floof. I do like to set the table, but frankly we have not eaten in here since the Spring. We spend enjoy many of our dinners outside on the patio during Summer.

See what I said about sunflowers? I added a few to the basket. Also, how do you like my non-staged picture? I am trying to decide where to hang the painting. In the mean time, it will enjoy its temporary home here.

I had not decorated my tiered tray since Easter, so I pulled it out to decorate for the lazy days of Summer.

I was inspired by late Summer… sunflowers are blooming, my apples are *almost* ready for picking.

Continuing my love for blue and white . I love how well the sunflowers go with the blue and white!

I shopped around the house to decorate the tiered tray.

And that’s it! I’ve been busy daydreaming about Fall decorating. Today I’m hiding inside since it’s 107 outside… yuck! The majority of this Summer I’ve been outside, reading my kindle, floating in the pool… life has been good!

Late Summer early Fall decor in my house. I like to use sunflowers and apples. As we get closer to September, I’ll throw in a pumpkin or two.

While nutcrackers are traditionally associated with Christmas, this nutcracker is a Summer nutcracker! Isn’t he cute. I love the little mini basket with mini apples that I recently found.

Above the range I’ve placed olive buckets and filled them with faux geraniums. I do like the pop of red up there. I don’t know if I’ll switch them out for the Fall for something else, but for now I like them there. summer to fall decorating

A Late Summer Early Fall Tiered Tray

I’m so excited to be participating in a late Summer/Early Fall decorating blog hop! We are sharing how we decorate for the transition between seasons.

Today I am sharing a tiered tray in my kitchen. When I think of late Summer, I think of sunflowers. So I used faux sunflowers as a base for a pop of color. Then I started putting other pieces around them.

Apple season will be here before pumpkin season, so these mini faux green apples I thought were perfect for this transitional decor piece! The faux florals were the only thing I bought for this vignette, but I know I’ll use them again and got them for a deal at Michael’s.

Then I walked around my house and shopped my home. Do you do that? I was picking up various things that reminded me of the Fall. I dug through the cabinet and oh, what’s that, a tea cup for Thanksgiving… perfect colors for my tiered tray.

Below, an antique chicken and chick vase figurine and a handmade little snail box.

The Bavarian bear reminds me of Oktoberfest which starts in September. He is actually a little smoker. The vintage transfer ware cow creamer matches all the other china pieces.
Various other trinkets were gathered… a fig scented candle. Mini white vases. Things to “fill it up”.

Here are some decorating elements you can use to transition from Summer to Fall:

apples
sunflowers
twigs or old wood
dried flowers, such as hydrangeas
leaves that are more green in color, as it is early Fall
copper and brass accents
Fall colored throws
corn

If you want to go full on Fall, you can start putting little pumpkins in your decor, but if you are still feeling like you’re not done with Summer, I’d say to avoid the pumpkins.

Summer Mudroom Style and a Vintage Garden Hop

I’ve styled my mudroom for the Summer with touches from the garden. I don’t have a garden yet since we just moved into this new house. A basket full of dried lavender sits on the shelf. I dried the lavender from the garden last year! The lavender sits in a vintage basket. Last year at Christmas I gave out little bunches of dried lavender – I do hope people enjoyed them as much as I do!

The sunflowers came from Trader Joes – we forgot to plant some this year! Too many things going on… next year we’ll remember! I have had fun photographing the sunflowers throughout the house. They really do brighten any room!

On the shelves of the cabinet sit vintage baskets, an antique pitcher, vintage hen-on-nests, and an antique dough bowl. The dough bowl has been sitting on top more as holding spot until Fall and Winter. It’s quite big and would take so many flowers to fill in the Spring!

The straw hat is an essential for the Summer – this one is UPF 50 to protect my sensitive ~~pale~~ porcelain skin. summer mudroom

Love my Mackenzie Childs boots I picked up at their sale a few years ago. I confess I bought them a size too big on accident and then they were all sold out – that’s okay, big fluffy socks make up the size difference.

Summer Farmhouse Kitchen

A Summer farmhouse kitchen. Or should I call it a midsummer kitchen? Either way, it’s a kitchen with sunflowers! Keeping it clean using the sunflowers as a pop of color.

First though, lay the flowers in the sink, take a picture. Then I trimmed them. I love the “flowers-in-the-sink” type of picture with farmhouse sinks! I don’t know what it is… seems so appropriate for a farmhouse sink.

We had intended to plant sunflowers this year, but we forgot. We’ve been super busy. (That’s also why I decreased the amount of posting on the blog for the meantime and readership is down because everyone else is busy too! )

I thought life was going to be slower since we moved into our house. But then we decided to build a pool and pool house… which isn’t ready yet even though it’s midsummer…. harrumph!!! Oh well, we can wait.

There’s still plenty of work to do inside. In the mean time though, I’ll take a moment to relax and stop to smell the ~~roses~~ sunflowers.

Nothing to me says Summer quite like sunflowers. I love the yellow against the black and the white Mackenzie Child’s Courtly check!

I’ve slowly been expanding my courtly check collection. It all started with these candle sticks. Then the placemats and napkin rings. The pitcher is new this year.

I actually had a dream about creating this table. I guess you could say I dreamt it up – literally! Sometimes some of my best design ideas come from my dreams in my sleep. Does that happen to you? black and white table with sunflowers

It happens to my Mom too, in fact, we call it “Schlafkreativ” – meaning sleeping creativity in German. We made up that word, btw, but in German you can make up words by adding words together, no, really! It’s called compound German words. Okay, back to the table. I decided to leave the white tablecloth underneath the placemats to make a nice white base for the black and white check.

Love this little pitcher I bought earlier this year! You can totally use it for serving… but I have only used it as a vase so far!

Blue and White Table Setting for Summer

I’m so excited to share this fun blue and white table setting for Summer!

I received my French bistro chairs last week and was so excited to show them off!

They are actually going to be used outside – but we are building a pool and there’s construction people and a mess back there and I didn’t want them getting ruined.

So they found a temporary home in the breakfast nook!

Then the next day, I was at Costco and found these gorgeous peonies. I love the dark pink color!

I’ll never tire of peonies! My favorite flower. If you’ve missed it, I wrote about everything you need to know about peony care here.

The plates are Spode “Blue Italian”.

Found them for a song at Home Goods and naturally couldn’t pass them up!

Pitcher is by Juliska and chargers are from Hobby Lobby. The gold cutlery is plastic! See, you can mix cheap with expensive! You wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t told you.

What are your Summer plans? Mine are to *hopefully* sit in my pool… but it’s not done. So maybe it will be next Summer!

5 Tips for Summer Entertaining Outdoors

Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial kick-off to Summer and I’ve got 5 tips for Summer entertaining outdoors to use for your next party!

1. Serve what’s in season. I love growing my own fruits and vegetables if I can. There’s just something nice about picking straight from the garden and putting them on my plate. If you don’t have your own garden, a local farmer’s market would be ideal, but even you can’t go there… grocery store is fine too! Either way, what’s in season will taste the best!2. Use mesh food dome/food tents to cover your food. This will help keep the flies and bees away from your food. I found these cute ones at HomeGoods!

3. Use plastic utensils. Say what? For large outdoor parties, I recommend plastic utensils, because I don’t know about you but I hate doing dishes! Can you believe these utensils below are plastic?

4. Have lots of cold drinks on hand. I don’t know about where you live, but here in California it is not uncommon to hit 100 degrees in the Summer. So a cold refreshing drink is a must! I like to purchase a variety of options for guests – and most people will probably drink at least two drinks, if it is hot out and the party is long.

5. Use seasonal flowers for an extra pop. If you want to take your outdoor party to the next level, you can wow your guests with using seasonal flowers on your centerpiece.
